Map This! Chicago

From: Cory Baitz
Re: FTP Site

I had a folder set up on IIT's ftp site for our class. Inside the folder are subfolders for each of our topics. This is a great way to share digital information within our groups. Here is the info for accessing the site:

IP: 216.47.149.11
Foldername: 497Sprawl
Username: sprawl
Password: felsen

Any questions, just let me know. Thanks, Cory

Re: Comments from 9/28 Class

  • The initial projects are very exciting and show great potential.
  • Attempt to move beyond documenting “what” and towards documenting “why” and “how.”
  • Ask yourself, “How will my map enhance Chicagoans' understanding of their city?”
  • Move towards facts and away from assumptions and emotions.
  • Double check your facts and confirm your sources of information. The public trusts you to give them correct information, and you have an obligation to ensure that your sources are reliable.
  • Each theme can be interpreted in many ways, so define your interpretation of it. In other words, tell the audience what you mean by “Flat” or “Connected.”
  • Focus the hypothesis…don't try to do too much with one map. It is better to explore one theme deeply rather than multiple themes casually. Find the most interesting question you can, and dive into it.
  • Keep in mind that many members of the public have trouble interpreting maps. Focus on simplicity and readability. Will a 15-year-old understand it? Will an 80-year-old be able to read the small print?

Re: Illustrator

I have downloaded the artwork from the FTP site that some of you uploaded there. Thanks for doing that. It is a great way for me to access it. If you haven't uploaded your work yet, please do.

I know we are still early in the process of creating final maps, but many of the files I opened are illustrator files with LINKED artwork placed into illustrator.

The artwork we need for final needs to be CREATED in illustrator as vector artwork.

If you are placing any files in illustrator, those files will not be able to be used for final. Many are low-res and from sources that I cannot retrieve.

Photographs are a different story. Photos can be placed in illustrator as part of your presentation, but you need to include the hi-res original photo file as part of your submission.

If you find maps from other sources that you draw ideas and inspiration from, you will need to draw the map yourself in illustrator and make it your own.

If anyone needs help with this, let me know.
